Abstract

PAA Disaster Response Network (DRN) activates when an Alberta emergency is determined to be a disaster. Psychologists are invited to join this lunch and learn to get the most up-to-date information about PAA DRN protocols, logistics, and disaster trauma treatment basics.

“Psychologists help those in disaster circumstances to build their skills of resilience to move from feeling helpless to having a more long-term, realistic perspective. The process can include taking small steps toward concrete goals and connecting with others as they learn to cope with disaster’s logistical and emotional challenges”. (APA, April 2014)

Learning Objectives

  • A clear understanding of the logistics and goals of the PAA Disaster Response Network

  • Identify typical psychological issues presented by individuals impacted by disasters.

  • Review therapeutic psychological interventions helpful in disasters and short-term telepsychology sessions

  • Learn about challenges and barriers to Albertans accessing care during disasters.

  • Determine basic required knowledge and skills for ethical DRN interventions

  • Identify ways to strengthen the PAA’s DRN program to support Albertans.
