Abstract

As societies become increasingly diverse, professionals and front-line staff must develop cultural compassion and humility in supporting older adults from ethnocultural backgrounds. This webinar, Aging Across Cultures: Understanding Ethno-Diversity in Older Adult Care, explores how cultural beliefs shape aging, mental health, family dynamics, and well-being. Participants will gain insights into culturally responsive psychological care, common barriers to accessing services, and strategies to foster meaningful, strength-based engagement with older adults and their families. Through case studies and interactive discussions, this session equips professionals with practical tools to enhance culturally humble and compassionate care practices in their work.

Learning objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand cultural perspectives on aging.

  • Recognise the role of culture in health and well-being.

  • Enhance culturally compassionate and humble care practices.

  • Address barriers and challenges in cross-cultural care.

  • Explore family and community roles in aging.

  • Apply a strength-based and culturally humble approach to aging support.

Dr. Rose Joudi

Dr. Rose Joudi (Ph.D. Psych.) is an aging and ethnic diversity researcher, consultant, and international speaker on ethnocultural diversity, elder abuse and ageism. Dr. Joudi developed a program focusing on ethnocultural older adult mistreatment and abuse for the province of Alberta and is currently working at Carya as Project Manager for The Way In Network (TWIN) which is a collaboration of Calgary-based agencies that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and access to services and support for vulnerable older adults living in the community and their families. Dr. Joudi is also a current board member of the Alberta Association on Gerontology (AAG) and is an advisor for Alberta's Ministry of Seniors, Community, and Social Services. His new book, Mind the Science: Saving your Mental Health from the Wellness Industry, aims to educate and embolden those who wish to make informed decisions about their mental health, to improve science and mental health literacy, and to pull back the curtain on the devastating consequences of allowing pseudoscience promoters to target the vulnerable within our society. It’s a must-have for readers of popular science who are curious to understand what mental health really means, or who have been touched by mental illness in some way. It provides readers with a science-backed takedown of pseudoscience, as well as an understanding of its evolution, seduction, and solution. In part, this involves exposing the mental health misinformation that pervades healthcare, pop culture, social media, and the wellness industry.
