Suicide is the leading cause of maternal death in the first year following childbirth. This workshop will be most useful for clinicians who work with any individuals of reproductive age, as 1 in 7 women will develop a perinatal mood disorder and 1/3 of those who do, already are seeking care for a pre-existing mental health condition. This workshop will address the basic concepts of what perinatal mood disorders are, how to assess them, recognizing warning signs and when to refer treatment to a specialist.
To understand the difference between 'Baby Blues' /'mom worries' and Perinatal Depression, Perinatal Anxiety, Perinatal OCD, Perinatal PTSD, Perinatal Bi-Polar and Perinatal Psychosis.
To understand the prevalence of perinatal mood disorders and the consequences of lack of correct treatment.
To identify the warning signs/risk factors of perinatal mood disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.
To gain competence in assessment tools that can be used to identify the type and severity of perinatal mood disorder
To learn what can be treated by a generalist psychologist and what should be referred to a specialist.
To gain understanding of the specific types of training required to treat moderate or severe perinatal mood disorders.
Kristine Aanderson, MA, PMH-C
Kristine was the first Registered Psychologist in Western Canada to become certified by Postpartum Support International in the treatment of perinatal mental health. She specializes in the treatment of mood disorders occurring through pregnancy, loss, birth, NICU stays and postpartum. Kristine has spent the last 15 years developing expertise in supporting perinatal clients with OCD, Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, ADHD and Grief. She also has additional training in treating members of the LGBTQ+ community. She has spoken at conferences across North America and the UK and maintains a website full of resources for people struggling with perinatal mental health.
Mallory Becker R. Psych. (Counselling & Health Psychology)
Mallory completed several advanced trainings in perinatal psychology from worldwide instructors and institutions. Co-founder, owner, and lead Psychologist at Pine Integrated Health Centre (a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in perinatal health). Approved CAP Supervisor and previous university sessional instructor with over a decade of experience in treating perinatal struggles in individuals and couples.
Dr. Gina Wong, R.Psych
Gina is a professor in the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology at Athabasca University. She specializes in perinatal mental health and has a program of research focused on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). She is the Vice-President of the Postpartum Support International Canada launching May 2022. Dr. Wong also specializes in reproductive mental health forensics and has been involved as an expert witness in maternal infanticide and filicide criminal court cases. She is actively involved in developing competency-based specialized training in this area. Dr. Wong is also the Founder and President of the Asian Gold Ribbon campaign, a non-profit national organization working towards developing integrated Asian mental health services across Canada. She has edited books such as Moms Gone Mad (Wong, 2012) and Infanticide and Filicide: Foundations in Maternal Mental Health Forensics (Wong & Parnham, 2021).
