Abstract

In this webinar, we will explore how psychologists can navigate these complexities in real-world clinical situations. We will examine the ethical foundations of confidentiality, consider common dilemmas that arise in practice, and discuss practical decision-making approaches when ethical principles, clinical needs, and legal obligations intersect.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the legal and ethical framework governing confidentiality for psychologists in Alberta, including relevant legislation and professional standards.

  • Identify and apply the major exceptions to confidentiality, including the “Five C’s” framework.

  • Differentiate between court orders and subpoenas and determine appropriate responses in practice.

  • Recognize breach reporting obligations and outline appropriate documentation and risk management steps.

  • Analyze and respond to complex real-world case scenarios involving competing legal, ethical, and safety considerations.

Dr. Harpreet Gill

Harpreet Gill, Ph.D. R. Psych., is PAA’s Director of Professional Guidance. She is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta with over 16 years of counseling experience with adults and couples. She has worked in the Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP), and private and non-profit settings. Her areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, PTSD, relationship issues, grief, addictions (including assessments), trauma, self-esteem issues, and immigrants’ mental health concerns.

Continuing Education

The Psychologists' Association of Alberta (PAA) is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer Continuing Education (CE) for psychologists. This webinar is offered for one (1.0) hour of CE credit. A full view of the course materials is required to receive Continuing Education Credits. Partial credit will not be awarded. Credits will not be awarded if registration in the course expires prior to completion of the course. PAA maintains responsibility for the program.

Cancellation and Refunds

Upon purchase, the product will be available for 90 days. Cancellation and refunds may be applied for by email or phone call to the PAA Membership team. Cancellations received within 24 hours of registration for the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee. Cancellations received within 48 hours of registration for the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee, less a $35.00 + GST processing fee. PAA reserves the right to cancel any activity, in which case a full refund of the registration fee will be provided. No refunds will be issued if a CE Certificate has been generated.
