Intended Audience

This workshop will be most useful for clinicians who have clients that ask them to ‘write a prescription’ for a service dog or an emotional support animal and those who wish to suggest this route to clients.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the difference between Service Dogs, Emotional Support Animals and Therapeutic Pets.

  • Gain awareness of the wider concerns when prescribing support animals, including legislation issues, liability, human rights issues and methods of acquiring a supportive animal.

  • To learn to assess clients for the suitability of a support animal, including prescribing considerations for animals, contraindications and what type of animal is the best choice for support of a client.

  • Gain competence in implementing the Prescriber Guidelines for Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals in order to provide documentation for clients.

Presenter

Kristine Aanderson

Kristine Aanderson was the first Registered Psychologist in Western Canada to become certified by Postpartum Support International in the treatment of perinatal mental health. She specializes in the treatment of mood disorders occurring through pregnancy, loss, birth, NICU stays and postpartum. Kristine has spent the last 15 years developing expertise in supporting perinatal clients with OCD, Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, ADHD and Grief. She also has additional training in treating members of the LGBTQ+ community. She has spoken at conferences across North America and the UK and maintains a website full of resources for people struggling with perinatal mental health. 

Continuing Education

The Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) is approved by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) to offer Continuing Education (CE) for psychologists. This workshop is offered for one (1.0) hours of CE Credit. Full attendance at the workshop is required to receive Continuing Education Credits. Partial credit will not be awarded, and late arrivals or early departure will preclude awarding of Continuing Education Credits. PAA maintains responsibility for the program.

Cancellation and Refunds

Upon purchase, the product will be available for 90 days. Cancellation and refunds may be applied for by email or phone call to the PAA Membership Officer. Cancellations received within 24 hours of registration for the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee. Cancellations received within 48 hours of registration for the Continuing Professional Development activity will receive a full refund of the registration fee, less a $35.00 + GST processing fee. PAA reserves the right to cancel any activity, in which case a full refund of the registration fee will be provided. No refunds will be issued if a CE Certificate has been generated.
