Indigenous cultures highlight the significance of community, social connections, holistic methods, healing practices, and cultural humility in mental health. Recognizing these values can enable psychologists to build stronger social bonds and support networks for their clients. By incorporating these insights, psychologists can create more effective, culturally sensitive mental health care approaches that honor and respect the rich traditions and wisdom of Indigenous peoples.
Understand the distinctions among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, their unique culture, traditions, and worldviews.
Demonstrate an understanding about the historical and intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, especially related to the residential school system.
Learn culturally and respectful ways to engage with the Indigenous community, including Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other helpers.
Learn to incorporate traditional healing practices such as smudging, drumming, storytelling, and connection to the land.
